2014 Annual bowling competition

This year’s event was again held at Scarisbrick Bowling Club, Falkland Road and again the sun shined on the righteous as well as the many others attending. Although only about 40 people turned out for a very enjoyable day there was a lively atmosphere, generated in no small measure by the largest Lodge contingent from The Southport Emulation Lodge. Usually they all manage to secure an early elimination, the better to sample the delights of the bar. This year, however, W. Bro. John Todd and Bro. Michael Whalley attained near cult status by eschewing the lure of the beer and winning the ‘secondary’ or Plate Competition.

The Ladies Singles Competition produced some of the day’s best bowling culminating in Pat Dunne defeating Linda Pugh in the final. The main pairs event saw Michael Cox and Fred Mossman produce a bravura performance to defeat the formidable challenge of Peter Dunne and Ray Wheatley. They will now proceed to represent the Group in the Provincial Championship.

Apart from enjoying the excellent facilities of the Scarisbrick Club, we were all treated to a top class buffet by W. Bro. John Dawson and his catering team. The day’s events were brought to a close with all guests rolling a bowl at a target simultaneously in order to win a large bottle of whisky. Claire Wilford was the most accurate, much to the delight of her husband Bro. Dave Wilford.

After the Raffle prizes were presented to the winners by W. Bro Phil Stock. acting on behalf of W. Bro Colin Jenkins who had been summoned to his surprise birthday party! Overall, along with the contributions from Lodges and Chapters, we have a total nearing £500 to contribute to the Provincial Bowling and other Charities. This would not have been possible without these generous contributions which underpin initial costs and enable us to raise funds directly at the event.

Many thanks to all who attended and who so obviously enjoyed the day. We hope to see you again next year, hopefully in increased numbers.
