On 28th May, the final Craft meeting of the Group, the first following May’s Provincial Grand Lodge meeting, a recently admitted Joining Member, WBro. David Nigel Hughes, was Installed for the first time in Freshfield Lodge No. 8165. David previously occupied the Chair of his mother lodge, Thermopylae No. 4386 in the Province of Cheshire in 2007.
The ceremony was excellent and of the usual high standard witnessed at Freshfield Lodge. The work on the night was enjoyed and warmly received by sixty four members and guests including WBro Martin Lockyer Provincial Junior Grand Warden of the Province, the Representative of the VW Deputy Provincial Grand Master in Charge, who gave the Address to the Brethren, on his first official appointment since being invested. He was accompanied by newly appointed Group Officials: Group Chairman ~ WBro Colin Jenkins; Group Vice Chairman ~ WBro Phil Stock; Group Secretary ~ WBro Geoff Jackson: Acting Provincial Officers ~ WBro Neil Latham ~ Provincial Grand Treasurer and WBro Brian Griffiths ~ Provincial Grand Steward, who presented the Address to the Stewards
The lodge was opened in the Scarbrough Temple by the IPM WBro Louis Vinnyey, deputising for the WM, WBro Greg Clements, who was unfortunately indisposed. Louis then handed over to the DC WBro Mike Melling PPrJGD, who conducted the Installation Ceremony. Bro Terry Lee, being his best and long standing friend in Masonry, presented the Master Elect. Lodge members who assisted in the ceremony included Bro Kenny Robinson, presenting the 3rd Degree Tools, WBro Louis Vinnyey, the 2nd Degree Tools (long version), Bro Alan James, a Fellowcraft, the 1st Degree Tools; WBro M Melling gave the Address to the Master and WBro Russ Hird, the Address to the Wardens.
On conclusion of the ceremony the Newly Installed Master presented Martin with three cheques to the value of £600: £250 to Macmillan Cancer Support, nominated by the WM; £250 to the Masonic Hall Foundation and £100 to Sri Lankan Disaster Relief, the latter being selected by the Lodge Committee on discovering that the Lodge’s most recent Master Mason, Bro Suranga Mallawa’s interest in Freemasonry was ignited in the wake of the tsunami. He was so impressed by the support from UGLE following the disaster that he was motivated to investigate freemasonry further …… and duly enlisted! He hopes to return to his homeland for a holiday this summer and the lodge thought it appropriate to furnish him with a cheque to present to the Master of any lodge he might visit, to disburse as he determines, possibly for disaster relief. This was a very well-kept secret, of which he was totally unaware, and he was extremely grateful to the Brethren for their generosity and support.
The enjoyment was maintained in the Scarbrough Dining Room where an excellent meal of Pea and Ham Soup, Slow Roast Pork and Vegetables, Fresh Fruit Salad, Cheese and Biscuits and Coffee was enjoyed. Around the Festive Board there was plenty of chatter about the coming season including how busy the new master was going to be ~ two ‘back to back’ 3rd Degree separate ceremonies on the same night proposed for the first ceremony after the summer recess in October. This is owing to the success in recruiting candidates – five Fellowcrafts waiting to be Raised – and the very good prospect of two more nominated for 2014/15. Freshfield Lodge is certainly thriving and looking very healthy; similarly the Southport Group itself!
